Established in Paris in 1670 —when King Louis XIV was 32 years old— the Maison HERBIN initially specialised in the sealing wax, fine stationery and ink trade, and imported shellac from India. The adventure of one of the oldest ink makers in the world began over three hundred years ago. A subsidiary of the Exacompta Clairefontaine group since 2003, the Maison HERBIN now expands its offer with the exclusive JACQUES HERBIN Collection, a complete universe of inks, writing instruments, stationery, and small leather goods for amateurs and connoisseurs of the lettering arts, calligraphy, and graphic arts. HERBIN’s aim has remained constant to: “Give body and color to our thoughts.”

This 50ml glass bottle of 1670 Rouge Hematite (scarlet red) ink was first released in 2010 in celebration of Jacques Herbin's 340th anniversary, and contains a gold shimmer/sheen. Rouge translates to red, and Hematite is an iron ore that when pulverized into a powder, can be used as red pigment. With a dark red color and earthy tone, it is a reminder of the historic color of the Herbin logo and the sealing wax used by the members of the royal courts. This rich deep dye ink will bring brightness and majesty to all your writing.

It is an ink formulated for use in fountain pens, though Jacques Herbin does put a pretty scary warning on the box about it being highly saturated and how you should clean it out of your pen regularly. The gold sheen is achieved by some sort of fine pigment that is quite visible in the bottle and even in your pen (if you can see in your pen), though we've found that it the Herbin warning is probably a little overstated. You will definitely want to be diligent about maintaining your pens with Rouge Hematite in it, though no particular caution needs to be taken as long as you're exercising regular pen maintenance.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.
